International Center at the University of Missouri & Paths Education’s American Summer Leadership Program 2018
This program will recruit promising late secondary school (10-12 and A level, age group 14-20) from Nepal and India to participate in a 9-day summer workshop at the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU/Mizzou) campus to aquaint them with the US, American culture, and the American higher education system.
The program will introduce these students to American culture, entrepreneurship, and leadership through this intensive, yet fun academic program at Mizzou. Students will be exposed to faculty in various disciplines along with guest speakers from government and industry. Students will engage in challenging exercises to develop leadership skills, team-building, debate and argumentation, problem-solving skills, and English skills (as needed for college in the US). Students will become familiar with US academic culture and will also become acquainted with diverse cultures. Students will also learn more about higher education opportunities in the US, and specifically at Mizzou, along with key steps in applying to US colleges and identifying scholarship opportunities for international students. Breakout sessions will be offered with faculty in majors of greatest interest to students. Students will be in residence in an MU dormitory and will be able to sample college life at a comprehensive American Midwestern university in a welcoming college town. They will also take occasional day trips to Jefferson City, Kansas City and St. Louis.
The target audience for this program consists of promising high school students in Nepal and India who are interested in preparing for higher education in colleges or universities in the US. Nepal and India has many very good students seeking higher education abroad and their education system is primarily in English so their language skills are generally very good. This program is one of the most affordable such programs in order to encourage participation by promising students desiring identify higher education opportunities in the USA that meet their interests.
The primary objective of this program is to bring to campus promising late secondary students who are interested in attending colleges or universities in the US. The program aims to help participants become familiar with the US and American culture, politics, religion, entrepreneurship, etc., and gives them insight into what higher education in the US has to offer.
Tentatively, this program will take place at two different times in 2018, with each session lasting 9 days and involving 20-30 students from Nepal or other South Asian countries.
